    Can you help me? I have an Indian silver bracelet which I received as a gift but the clasp has me stumped. It looks like a screw holding three loops. The two outer loops are from one side and the Center loop from the other. It has a round ball top but I cannot pull or turn it??

      Hi, without having the clasp in front of me it's difficult to know what kind it is or how it works. I recommend going into your local jewelry store and they may be able to help you.

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies

      Hi, we're using an acetylene/air torch. We have a tank of acetylene gas and it pulls in oxygen from the environment.

    What do you do if your punch is a bit larger than the setting. Most of the sets with a few in are random sizes not exact mm sizes

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies
      @HalsteadJewelrySupplies Месяц назад

      For sure! You don't want to use one that's the same size as you're stone - you're using one that slightly larger than the setting. So don't worry too much about what the size it says it is, just find one that just fits over to the top!

    Hello, thanks for the tutorial! I just did a class on tube setting and the first step in cutting the seat was to use a ball burr and all the other tutorials I have watched start with ball burr. Is they something different with the setting burr that you use that eliminates the need for the extra step of the ball burr?

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies
      @HalsteadJewelrySupplies Месяц назад

      Hi! Some people like to remove excess material with a ball bur first, but I just go straight to the setting bur usually. If the tube is appropriately sized, it's not too much material to cut away with the setting bur. You'll find the same technique done a few different ways frequently - just a matter of what works best for you!

    What’s the torch called?

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies
      @HalsteadJewelrySupplies 2 месяца назад

      That's a hand-held butane torch. There are a lot of different brands, but they're all pretty similar. An acetylene/air or smith little torch will also work though!

    Is it possible to solder the bolo beads to a backplate?

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies

      Unfortunately no - because they're lined with silicone, the heat from soldering would ruin that and how they stay in place.

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies
      @HalsteadJewelrySupplies 6 месяцев назад

      I'm not quite sure about the question you're asking. You need the material to be annealed before you roll it through the mill and annealing will ruin plating.

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies
      @HalsteadJewelrySupplies 8 месяцев назад

      We do recommend you wear the glasses, as repeated exposure to the welds can damage your eyes over time. We like the auto-darkening lens best, as it's lighter to align your weld and darkens during the weld.

    What is the best way to add the hallmark? Also, can white gold, platinum, palladium or titanium be used with the welder? Thank you so much!

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies
      @HalsteadJewelrySupplies 9 месяцев назад

      Most people don't add a hallmark to permanent jewelry. If you're selling ready to wear jewelry, you may want to have a hallmark. For chains there are tags you can purchase that are already stamped. Yes, you can use the welder for all of those materials. You'll just have to play around with the settings.

    So is a brass or steel ball peen hammer better for riveting?

  • @terp4u2
    @terp4u2 9 месяцев назад

    So maybe I don’t understand fully how a rivet is domed. Basically stretching the flat edge of metal rivet out and then ‘pulling’ it downward to form a dome. Then how do you strike a flat surface and pull down edges and still not mar the base ? All my rivets have sharp edges.

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies
      @HalsteadJewelrySupplies 9 месяцев назад

      When riveting, to spread the head you can use a ball peen or cross peen, but if the rivet it small a slightly domed face is all you need. Start at the center of the rivet and work out in a circular motion. When you get towards the edges, slightly angle your hammer so instead of just stretching the metal out, it will also be going downwards. It takes practice and hammer control to not hit the surface. A smaller hammer will also help with this - see my comment about hammers.

  • @terp4u2
    @terp4u2 9 месяцев назад

    Thank you for the video. What no video is explaining is how to not et sharp edges on the rivet. Can you explain how to get the river smooth? I’ve practiced and set over 60 copper in copper and maybe 2 are somewhat smooth tho not all around. Help

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies
      @HalsteadJewelrySupplies 4 месяца назад

      Hammering in a circular motion around the outside of the rivet helps get the edges down flat to the metal so they are not sharp. It leaves you with a gently domed rivet.

    • @terp4u2
      @terp4u2 4 месяца назад

      I have not been successful that way either. If you were watching someone rivet to teach, what would you look for them doing?

    • @HalsteadJewelrySupplies
      @HalsteadJewelrySupplies 4 месяца назад

      That would be the tip I would give them. You can go over your rivet after with a 3M radial wheel or scotchbrite wheel to soften the edges.
